Hair Follicle Bumps

What exactly is causing your hair follicle bumps?

It helps to start with talking about what the hair follicle is, and what it does.

The hair follicle is a special pore where, as you know, a hair grows. We have bunches of hair follicles–they’re all over our bodies, except for a few certain spots. Lucky for us, we don’t have hair on our tongues, the palms of our hands, the soles of our feet, and a few other areas.

The sebaceous glands produce some oily, waxy stuff called “sebum.” This is different from sweat. To give you an idea of what sebum feels like, our earwax contains sebum. It’s some greasy stuff. It’s no wonder it can lead to hair follicle bumps.

Problems with our skin, such as acne, can be caused by our sebaceous glands producing too much sebum. Anabolic steroids–the type of steroids that are used to build up muscle–can cause our sebaceous glands to make more sebum, and can lead to acne and other skin problems, too. Sebum can build up around body piercings, too. That includes ear piercings.

But it’s not just acne, anabolic steroids and piercings that can cause trouble in our follicles. Anytime bacteria or other germs make their way into our hair follicles, they can get irritated–which is called “folliculitis.” They can also get infected. Hair bumps can be caused by a lot of different things, and knowing what causes them is the first step in getting rid of them.
